At Bridges for Communities we are deeply saddened by the recent attacks on asylum hotels, faith spaces and migrant communities around the country. These have impacted individuals and families that we know and work with here in Bristol, as well as out volunteers and staff team.
Violence and racism of all kinds have no place in our society, and the actions of the few do not represent the vast majority of people in this city of this country. Week after week we see first-hand the goodwill and kindness of people who give their time and energy to create kinder, fairer and more welcoming communities. The flood of messages and offers of help in the last few days have only further demonstrated this.
We’ve made a few changes to our programming this week to ensure the safety of our friends and neighbours. Recent tensions have highlighted the divisions, stereotypes, and fear of others that continue to exist in our communities. We are more determined than ever to continue the long-term work of bringing people together, facilitating listening and dialogue, and learning to live well with difference.
Upcoming events will include Peace Feasts, where we’ll bring people together around food, Listening Spaces, where people can share different opinions and viewpoints, School Linking, where the next generation can get to know one another and learn from each other, and a range of programmes that let people fleeing war or persecution know they are welcome in our city.
